Andrea Jae bio picture

Welcome to the AJP blog!

Don't let the company name fool you.  Andrea Jae Photography actually consists of a pair of best friends who strive to create fresh images and fun experiences for the people who invite us into their stories.

I'm Andrea, the company owner, main blogger and laughter lover.  My associate Renata is the detail shooter, pray-er, mother (of two!), and sanity keeper.  We shoot every wedding and session together and wouldn't have it any other way.

Over the past year, we have come to realize that our first love is not photography.  It's love.  The reason we throw ourselves into our work is because photography allows us to communicate love tangibly.  Through our pictures, we strive to share love and tell its story.  We are the people who believe that love can actually change the world.  We want to tell people about it.  Photography enables us to do so.

Feel free to use the menu bar to find out more about us, see our work and say hello!  Thanks for joining us in this little adventure we are so blessed to be on.

Andrea & Renata

Out of the office!

Just a quick post to say that I’ll be on vacation starting tomorrow until next Monday!  Drew and I are headed to Hilton Head with his family for a long weekend and I’m stoked.  I’m not taking the laptop (gasp!), so no blog posts or email until I get back.

Happy Fourth!

For the bride and the blogstalker…

Two images from the week:

1. Jessica & Ryan’s Eastern Shore wedding…perfect weather, relaxed evening, sweet couple.  The full post should be up early next week!

2. A new side of AJP, never before seen: fashion photography?  Nah.  But we did get to try our hand at some cool lighting with gorgeous models at the DC Photog Shootout today!  More on that with more images later.  For now, eye candy that’s a little different:

Ashley & Richard :: Wedding

I woke up, checked the weather and thought of Ashley & Richard.  An hour later, I checked the weather again and thought of Ashley & Richard.  The forecast called for a rainy Saturday and we were scheduled for Ashley & Richard’s outdoor wedding in a couple hours.  I checked the weather every 15 minutes until we left.  Ashley greeted us with a warm hug when we arrived at the Blue Heron center in Quiet Waters Park.  The reception was still being set up and, despite a couple of nerves, Ashley glowed with a smile.  We smiled, too.  Thoughts of the weather became secondary.

It rained while Ashley got dressed.  It rained when they exchanged gifts.  It rained as we shot the bouquet.  Then, with ten minutes to spare, the rain stopped, the clouds parted and the sun shimmered.  The ceremony was beautiful.

Ashley & Richard are the kind of couple you can’t help but to root for.  Their chemistry is undeniable and the love that has developed between the two of them is obviously solid.  Their love was truly celebrated on their wedding day and we celebrated right alongside.

Ashley & Richard, we can’t tell you how grateful we are to have you as clients.  You made us feel so welcome and we truly consider you friends.

This post has a lot of images, so prepare.  To view more favorites in the slideshow, click here!

One of the first shots of Ashley on her wedding day - a good one. :)

Richard waited patiently while Ashley got ready.

Renata caught this image right before Ashley walked down the aisle:

Getting married!

Right after walking the aisle as man and wife, I caught them under some trees :)

As we walked to get some bridal party shots, Ashley flaunted her new married status.  I love it!

Such a fun bridal party!

I love yellow and the reception was decked out in it!

First dance:

Renata caught this one - a lot of smiling these two do…

Ashley & Richard were totally okay with taking a ton of pictures.  During the reception, we slipped out while the light was perfect.

My favorite image of the day:

At the very end of the night, we grabbed a few night shots:

Happy birthday, sisters!

Although their birthday was on Saturday, I still thought it fitting to wish them a happy birthday publicly.  I am the younger of three sisters by three years, my older sisters being identical twins.  Yep, identical.  As a kid, I couldn’t understand how people had trouble telling them apart.  I could.  Nowadays, they’re pretty distinguished from each other, but they have remained as close as ever.

Rachel & Rebekah, I won’t disclose your age here, but I do want to wish you a happy birthday.  I love you!

Wednesday - June 24, 2009 Chrissy - All of you have amazing hair :)

Wednesday - June 24, 2009 Sarah - i always thought that they looked different

A quick preview

A small preview from yesterday’s wedding.  I have to tell you, this image is straight out of the camera, it has no artistic editing done to it, just resizing and web sharpening.  That’s how insanely beautiful the light and couple were!

Full post coming this week!

Tuesday - June 23, 2009 Jess Schremp - LOVE it! Amazingly goregous

Melissa & JP :: Engagement

Renata and I still get a little nervous before every shoot.  We try our best to arrive a few minutes early to look around each location and then bravely put on our game faces.  We love our clients.  And nothing pumps us up more than knowing they have confidence in us.

One of the first things out of Melissa and JP’s mouths as we were standing on one of National Harbor’s docks was, “It’s your vision, take your time.”  Renata and I stood a little taller and went for it.  And we had a great time!

Melissa & JP were so easy to shoot and genuinely fun to hang out with.  No idea was too farfetched and every new pose and location were fun.  People in love…I tell you what. :)  Both of them laid back and relaxed, Melissa & JP are genuinely in love and seriously made it easy for us to capture.  There was not a single forced smile and lots of making out.  If you’ve been shot by us, you know we encourage making out. :)

Like I said before, we shot their engagement session at National Harbor, which was fantastic!  It’s built up enough to have some nice stuff, but it wasn’t crowded and everything is new!  We started on the docks.  When one of the first shots of the day is this, you know it’s going to be a good day:

While looking around before Melissa & JP arrived, Renata and I happened to walk into Aloft, associated with W Hotels, and found a photographer’s field day!  With chic furniture and lots of natural light, we spent a good chunk of time there.

The next thing we found was an art gallery.  I almost died. :)

At Melissa & JP’s suggestion, we decided to check out the Gaylord National Hotel & Convention Center, which is ridiculous inside!  It boasts a giant atrium full of trees, restaurants, shops and even a fountain show set to music.

With the fun fountain, whose timed music show we missed.

Hands down, my favorite shot of the day.  Melissa, you are beautiful!

After our adventure at the Gaylord, we finished the session outside where we started.

Way to work the man sass, JP. :)

When you have a statue like this around, it must be shot:

And to conclude, I had to add this picture of me and Melissa (I look some kind of goofy and Melissa still looks great):

Melissa & JP, we had such a great time with you!  Thanks for a no stress, rockin’ good time.  We’ll shoot you anytime! :)

TMI Tuesday :: The gym vs. the grocery store

You should be so proud of me.  And Renata.  Since wedding season started almost a month ago, we have been trying our best to get to the gym everyday Tuesday-Friday by 9am-ish.  That’s right.  We both get up early to get some things done before then, strap the kids in the car and trek to the gym.  On Wednesdays we battle through muscle conditioning class.  We are hard core.  Sometimes.

There have been two times now that we have headed out, intentioned for the gym with kids in tow, only to end up in work out clothes milling around Target and such.  But hey, I can justify Target.  I need stuff.  I bought some cute ribbon for packaging my photography orders and I’m saving money by browsing the dollar section (oh yes, I can justify that).  It just couldn’t wait.  Today, though, we opted for a trip to the grocery store instead of the gym.  And to be honest, it wasn’t even a fair struggle; the groceries won way too easily.  As we pushed our carts through the aisles, I silently congratulated myself for not throwing the coveted pint of ice cream in my cart.  Then I remembered that I had chosen the grocery store, where the enemy of the gym is purchased, over working out.  I took back the silent congratulations.

Tomorrow is Wednesday and you can be sure we’ll be at the gym.  I expect you to ask me.  Help a sister out.

Wednesday - June 17, 2009 maria - check out those guns! :)

Wednesday - June 17, 2009 Kaley - So I guess the question is: Did you or didn't you? Inquiring minds want to know.
